UK and Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society [UKI NETS] came about in the year 2000 with a meeting of UK and Ireland neuroendocrine experts. At the time there was little interaction amongst the specialists with people working within their own small teams to manage these incredibly complex conditions. To compound matters there was a lack of evidence for treatments being used with no structure in place to deliver large scale trials. The UK-NETwork was created to meet these challenges. This later transformed in to UKI NETS.
The society represents scientists, nurses, allied health care workers and clinicians involved in providing services to NET patients. The society’s aims are to:
- Standardise practise in UK and Ireland
- Improve standards of NET services in UK and Ireland
- Support setting up specialist services
- Promote education
- Promote collaborations
- Promote clinical trials and research
The society has been very successful in meeting these targets. It has galvanised the community of NET experts, promoting discussions and collaborations, allowing sharing of experience, highlighting areas for development, and supporting research.
UKI NETS is transforming to be more responsive to the needs of the NET community and to face new challenges. The structure of the UKI NETS has been comprehensively revised in 2015 in order to make it more effective in delivering on each of the goals listed above. New sub-committees have been formed and members of society have been encouraged to contribute by applying to join them.
Following feedback from its members the society has set out to modify the website in order to meet their needs.
The society aims to be flexible and responsive in meeting its members’ requirements. Its overall aim is to deliver the highest possible level of care to NET patients through supporting and developing its members in becoming NET experts of the highest standard.
