The South Wales NET Team, led by Dr Mohid Khan, Consultant Gastroenterologist, won the UK Patient Experience Network Award, held in March in Birmingham. This award recognised the team’s successful transformation of the service for patients with Neuroendocrine Tumours across South Wales. Judges particularly commended the improvement of specific patient-reported experience and outcome measures, collected digitally and traditionally during service re-design. Dr Khan, of Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, commented ‘This is great recognition for the incredibly hard work of the team over the last 18 months, including our new CNSs, staff from a wide range of specialities, managers and importantly, our patient representatives. This also raises the awareness of Neuroendocrine Tumours in the patient experience community throughout the UK.’
In Wales, Neuroendocrine Tumour services are partially commissioned by WHSSC (Wales Heath Specialised Services Committee) in the South, with North Wales working with the NET centre in Liverpool.
Winners in the ‘Turning It Around’ category, Dr Khan stated ‘In less than two years, we have come a long way in caring for patients with NETs regardless of geography in Wales but are keen to make further improvements and achieve vital sustainability.’
